CASE STUDY / GROWTH ACCELERATION
Turning Trusted Delivery into Sustained Account Growth
A major client account more than doubled in two years as trusted delivery became a disciplined, repeatable approach to growth.
THE SITUATION
A critical regulatory program with fixed scope, immovable deadlines, and executive visibility became the proving ground for a broader client relationship.
THE RESPONSE
Deliver the critical work, earn executive trust, broaden the consulting team, and manage opportunities through an action-based pipeline cadence.
THE RESULT
The account revenue more than doubled in two years and became a flagship account for the firm.
HOW DELIVERY BUILT TRUST
I joined a major client account shortly after moving into my first formal leadership role. Although my new role was intended to give me more time to develop client relationships and grow the business, I was asked to take on the account’s most demanding delivery assignment.
The client was preparing for a major annual program with immovable regulatory deadlines, significant executive visibility, fixed scope, and hundreds of people involved. I was new to the client’s industry. What I brought was experience planning and leading complex work, an ability to learn quickly, and the judgment to bring the right subject-matter expertise into the room when it was needed.
The program was delivered on time, on budget, and with high quality.
Successful delivery created something more valuable than a completed program: trust.
Sustained account growth came from a connected set of choices: deliver well enough to earn trust, listen for the next need, manage opportunities with discipline, assemble the right capabilities, and give talented people a reason to keep creating value for the client.
HOW TRUST & OPERATING MODEL LED TO GROWTH
Through executive steering committees and day-to-day leadership of the program, I built relationships with senior leaders across the client organization. Those relationships created visibility into a broader set of business needs and opportunities. On a subsequent critical program, I was able to shift from personally carrying a full-time delivery role to leading a broader consulting team, expanding both our impact and our footprint with the client.
From there, I built a more deliberate account-growth model.
I made sure consultants across the account understood the work we had delivered, the outcomes it had created, and the capabilities available across the firm so they could recognize opportunities and tell a consistent story when they encountered new buyers.
I established a weekly pipeline cadence focused on action rather than reporting. For every opportunity, account leaders identified the specific next step required to advance it, who owned that action, and when it would happen. Opportunities were actively managed rather than allowed to sit indefinitely in a pipeline.
I also looked beyond the traditional boundaries of the account. I developed partnerships with technology companies that could create complementary product and implementation opportunities, worked across internal business units to serve the client more seamlessly, and partnered with other consulting firms when doing so created the best solution for the client.
Account growth was reinforced by a deliberate effort to improve the consultant experience. As the account became a place where talented people could take on meaningful leadership opportunities, develop new capabilities, and accelerate their careers, consultants became more engaged, delivered stronger work, and strengthened client relationships further.
The result was substantial, profitable growth. The account more than doubled in two years and became a flagship account for the firm.
